The staff of Oakland Animal Hospital is deeply committed to improving the well-being of not just their clients, but to the lives of the animals within the community. That commitment is demonstrated by our support for local shelters and our latest outreach program, PetOx which provides oxygen masks for dogs and cats to emergency responders in the community.

Oakland Animal Hospital works with the Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge (RBARI) and the Friends of the Wayne Animals (FOWA). Assistance to these organizations is provided by participating in the donation of veterinary services such as discounted spays and neuters, individual fundraising events like tricky trays, walks and pet “make-overs” before adoption as well as annual food drives.

The PetOx program was implemented to address the oxygen needs of household pets in a house fire or other emergency. The effects of smoke inhalation and shock can be fatal, and the ability to deliver emergency oxygen immediately at the scene can make the difference between life and death. Unfortunately for dogs and cats, human oxygen face masks don’t fit the facial anatomy of pets. In response to this situation, Oakland Animal Hospital donated masks to fit cats and dogs of all sizes to firefighters and first aid squads in Oakland, Wayne, and Franklin Lakes and provided training to these emergency responders on how to give care to our four-legged friends when there is an emergency. In response to today’s challenging economy which finds New Jersey families turning to food banks in record numbers, Oakland Animal Hospital launched this community outreach program by establishing a pet food bank, Oakland Animal Food Bank. The pet food bank will collect and distribute food for loving and loved pets belonging to families in need. “When you hear stories of people having to give up their pets because of budget reasons, it is heartbreaking. Families need their pets even more during difficult times for comfort and to help relieve stress. We hope that by establishing the Oakland Animal Food Bank, we can help maintain the vital human and animal bond,” said Dr. Robert Gordon, director of Oakland Animal Hospital and founder of the Food Bank. The Oakland Animal Food Bank will collect donations at their location on 86 Ramapo Valley Road in Oakland, NJ Monday through Friday 9-5 and Saturday 9-11.
